Why choose color over clear film?

Colored wrapping film is pigmented LLDPE with the same stretch and cling as ordinary wrapping film, only with pigment in the material itself. Technically very little changes; what changes is what the film communicates. An opaque layer hides the load from view, and a color makes a pallet instantly recognizable on a busy loading bay.

That makes color worthwhile in two situations in particular: when nobody needs to see what is on the pallet, and when your staff have to tell apart shipments that otherwise look identical.

What color does not do

Color does not make the film stronger. Load retention comes from thickness and the number of layers, exactly as with clear film. So do not drop a thickness because the film is opaque – choose thickness on the weight and shape of the load.

The colors we stock

This is how the seven colors are spread across our range. Black and white have the widest choice; the remaining colors are stocked in the most requested size.

ColorProductsContents visibleWhat this color is used for
Black7NoFully screening theft-sensitive or confidential loads
White4NoA clean, neutral look towards store and customer
Blue2LimitedMarking a regular customer, route or site
Yellow2LimitedUrgent shipments that load first
Green2LimitedReturns and internal movements
Orange2LimitedExceptions: oversized, overweight, fragile
Red2LimitedBlocked pallets or loads awaiting inspection

Black and white are fully opaque. The other colors still let light and outlines through in thinner grades; if complete screening is the goal, choose black or white.

Black or white: which to pick?

Black wrapping film is the classic choice when the contents must stay invisible. It blocks virtually all light, so even the shape of the boxes is hard to make out. Do bear in mind that a black pallet gets considerably warmer in full sun than a clear one, which matters for temperature-sensitive goods.

White wrapping film screens just as effectively but reflects light instead. It looks tidier in a retail setting and keeps the load cooler in the sun. For food, pharma and anything going straight onto the shop floor, white is often the more comfortable choice.

Building a color code that sticks

Color coding only works if everyone knows the same rule. Three guidelines from practice:

  • Keep it to four colors or fewer. Nobody remembers more meanings than that, and the system falls back on guesswork.
  • Tie the color to an action, not a department. "Yellow loads first" works; "yellow belongs to purchasing" tells the forklift driver nothing.
  • Post the scheme where the wrapping happens. A single sheet at the wrapping station prevents most mistakes.

If your carrier already works with colors, align your scheme with theirs rather than running a second system alongside it.

Applying it by hand or by machine

Colored film handles exactly like clear film. For individual pallets, take a 50 cm roll and a foil dispenser; for runs, the same color goes onto a pallet wrapper without trouble. One point to watch when wrapping by machine: opaque film makes it impossible to see whether the load is still sitting square. Check the pallet before you start.

If you only need to screen a bundle or part of a pallet, a narrow roll of mini wrapping film is enough.

Colored film and recycling

Like clear film, colored wrapping film is polyethylene and belongs in the film stream. Colored material does produce a darker regranulate, so it is usually processed into applications where color is irrelevant, such as tubular film or construction sheeting. Common industry practice also holds that black pigment can hinder optical sorting on recycling lines. Keep colored film separate from clear film if your waste processor asks for it – that yields a cleaner fraction and often a better rate.

Ordering colored wrapping film

All seven colors are held in stock and supplied per roll or per box, with quantity discounts on larger volumes. Ordered on working days before 3:30 PM? Then your order will be shipped the same day. Enjoy free delivery on orders over €75 excl. VAT. Need a color that is not listed here, or film carrying your own logo? Let us know and we will look at the options and the minimum order quantity.

Frequently asked questions about colored wrapping film

Is colored film stronger than clear film?

No. Strength comes from thickness and the number of layers, not from the pigment. At the same thickness, colored film holds just as much weight as clear film.

Which color screens best?

Black and white are fully opaque. With red, blue, green, yellow and orange you can still see faint outlines in thinner grades – enough to mark a pallet, not enough to screen it completely.

Does a black pallet heat up in the sun?

Yes, noticeably more than a clear or white one. If the load stands outside for a while and is temperature-sensitive, choose white or cover it with a top sheet.

Can I run colored film on my wrapping machine?

Without any modification. It behaves identically under pre-stretch. The only difference is that the opaque layer hides any shifting during wrapping, so inspect the pallet beforehand.

How many colors does a good system need?

Three to four colors work best in practice. Beyond that, the risk of confusion grows faster than the clarity you gain.

Is colored film recyclable?

Yes, as PE film. The return is lower than for clear film because the regranulate turns dark. Ask your waste processor whether they want colored film collected separately.

Do you supply printed film or custom colors?

On request. We can have a run produced in your house color or with your logo printed on it; ask us about minimum volumes and lead times.

Why is white film popular in food logistics?

White screens the load without trapping heat and looks clean and neutral. That matches the presentation standards food and pharma customers expect from a pallet.
