Looking for stretch film with a smooth outer surface? Since 2007, we have been the go-to wholesaler for one-sided adhesive wrapping film. This is LLDPE film in which the cling sits on the inner surface only. While you wrap, the turns bond to each other perfectly well and the wrap stays closed, but the outside of the wrap stays smooth. Wrapped trolleys and pallets therefore do not stick together, they can stand shoulder to shoulder in transit, and the film is not torn open when they are moved apart. Cling on one side only: how the film is built up

One-sided adhesive wrapping film starts life as ordinary LLDPE stretch film. The difference lies in the build-up: the film is co-extruded in several layers, and only the inner layer is given cling. No glue is involved — cling is a property of the film material itself, which makes film layers lying against each other bond together. While you wrap, the film therefore bonds to itself perfectly well and the wrap stays closed. The difference is on the outside: that face stays smooth. Standard wrapping film carries that cling on both faces, which is precisely why two wrapped loads weld themselves together the moment they meet.

What a smooth outer surface is worth in practice

Cling on the outside only becomes a nuisance once packed units are pushed up against each other. The film on one trolley tears open during unloading because it has grabbed hold of its neighbour; a pallet drags half the wrap off the pallet beside it as the forklift pulls away. A smooth outer face removes that failure mode entirely. Units slide past one another, each stays independently wrapped, and the shipment arrives intact. It also means you can load units tight against each other and make better use of the loading space.

There is a second, less obvious gain: dust, sawdust and workshop grime settle far less readily on a smooth outer layer. In a joinery, a concrete flooring business or a horticultural nursery, that shows in how clean the goods look on arrival.

What stays exactly the same

Holding power comes from thickness, stretch and the number of layers you apply — never from the number of clinging faces. At equal thickness, a one-sided adhesive roll therefore restrains a load just as firmly as a conventional roll. Select your thickness the way you always would, on the weight and shape of the goods, and treat the cling purely as a handling property.

Typical applications

This film was developed for one situation in particular: packed units that touch each other in transit or in storage. That happens more often than most warehouses realise.

Danish trolleys and CC containers

The classic application. Danish trolleys, also known as CC containers, are loaded tight against one another and knock together for the whole journey. Wrap them in film that clings on both sides and two trolleys stick to each other, so the packaging splits open as soon as you pull them apart. With one-sided adhesive film, the trolleys come apart cleanly and every wrap stays intact.

Flowers, plants and fresh produce

In ornamental horticulture a consignment often changes hands several times while it stays wrapped: grower to auction, auction to trader, trader to garden centre. Every one of those handovers is a moment when trolleys scrape past each other. Where the goods also need to breathe, the perforated version described further down this page is the one to look at.

Pallets loaded side by side

A full trailer leaves no gap between pallets. Wrapped in conventional film, the side walls bond, and lifting one pallet out pulls the wrap off the one beside it. One-sided adhesive film keeps each pallet self-contained. If your concern is hiding the contents rather than separating the loads, coloured wrapping film is the alternative to consider, though it does cling on both faces.

Loads that are still moved after wrapping

Roller conveyors, cold stores, narrow aisles: anywhere a packed unit has to slide past another one, a smooth outer face works in your favour. The same applies to short-term buffer storage, where pallets are parked flank to flank and still need to be picked out one at a time.

One-sided or two-sided cling: making the choice

The decision rests entirely on what happens to the load after it has been wrapped.

Put simply: if your wrapped units end up well spaced, the one-sided version buys you nothing and a conventional roll is the cheaper option. If they travel in contact with each other, the small extra outlay is repaid on the first delivery that arrives without a torn wrap.

12 or 17 my: which thickness suits your load?

The 12 my is the light-duty option, intended for light, regular loads without protruding corners: flowers and plants on trolleys, boxes of uniform size, lightweight plastic crates. It wraps easily and the roll goes a long way.

The 17 my delivers noticeably more grip and tear resistance. Choose it when the load is heavier, when corners or projecting parts come into play, or when the trolleys face a long run over poor road surfaces. It costs a little more per roll, but it saves turns: you reach the same stability with fewer layers.

Undecided? Start with the 17 my. If nothing tears and the load stands without effort, you can safely move down to the 12 my on your next order.

The perforated version

Alongside solid film there is a perforated one-sided adhesive film. The holes let air pass through the wrap, which matters for goods that must not overheat: plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables, as well as chilled products that would otherwise sweat under the film. Inside a solid wrap the temperature climbs and moisture condenses on the inner face; the perforations prevent that from happening.

Wrapping a Danish trolley: practical tips

A trolley behaves differently from a pallet: it is taller, narrower and it rolls. These four points make the biggest difference on the shop floor.

Anchor at the base. Two turns around the bottom shelf tie the whole trolley together; from there you spiral upwards.
Overlap by half. On a 45 cm roll that means moving up roughly 20 cm per pass — enough to give every point two layers of film.
Pull evenly rather than hard. On 12 my in particular, excessive tension is the main cause of tearing, especially along the edges of the shelves.
Finish under the top shelf. Take the last turns around the frame and press the tail against the previous layer; thanks to the one-sided cling it bonds on the inside only.

If you wrap trolleys all day, a dispenser with a brake pays for itself quickly. It takes over the pulling force and keeps the tension constant from the first turn to the last.

Frequently asked questions

Does this film cling to itself while wrapping?

Yes. The inner side has cling, so the turns bond to each other perfectly well and the wrap stays closed. Only the outside of the wrap is smooth, so two wrapped units that touch do not stick together.

How do I know which side is the clinging side?

You cannot see it on the roll; the film is wound so that the clinging side naturally faces the load when you unroll it normally. If in doubt, unroll a length and press it against itself: the side that bonds is the inner side.

Does this film hold less well than conventional wrapping film?

No. Grip within the wrap is identical; only the outside behaves differently. Load stability is governed by thickness and the number of layers, exactly as with any other stretch film.

Can I run this film on a pallet wrapper?

On most machines, no: this is hand film rather than machine film; the rolls are shorter, the material is not pre-stretched and the core diameter is smaller than that of machine film rolls. Is it suitable for outdoor storage?

For short periods, yes, but polyethylene discolours and weakens under UV light. If the load stands outside for longer, protect it from above with top sheets or a shrink pallet cover.

Can I use it to bundle small goods as well?

You can, but a 45 cm roll is awkwardly wide for that. For bundling cables, tubes or loose items, mini stretch film works far more comfortably.

What is the difference between the 45 and 48 cm widths?

Very little in use: both wrap a Danish trolley or a pallet in the same way, and both sit on a standard dispenser. The 48 cm roll gives slightly more coverage per turn, which saves a pass or two on taller loads.

Is one-sided adhesive film recyclable?

Yes, it is PE film and belongs in the film or PE waste stream. Keep it clean and dry and separate it from cardboard and other waste; that is how the stream retains most value.

How does perforated film differ from one-sided cling?

They are two independent properties. Perforation is about ventilation: the holes let air through. One-sided cling is about how the film behaves on its outer face. Both come together in the perforated version described above.
