Hand wrapping film is stretch film on a roll that you wind around a pallet or bundle by hand. It is the most widely used form of wrapping film, simply because it requires no investment in equipment: pick up the roll, anchor it at the base of the pallet and walk around.
The film is made of LLDPE and is tensioned purely by your own pulling force. That is exactly where it differs from machine film: a pallet wrapper pre-stretches the film mechanically to 250% or more, whereas by hand you typically reach around 150%. Hand wrapping film is therefore made thicker and tougher than film intended for a machine.
When is hand wrapping film the right choice?
As a rule of thumb, up to about twenty pallets a day is comfortably workable by hand. If you are consistently above that, machine wrapping film combined with a pallet wrapper becomes more economical, because the film consumption per pallet drops considerably. For peaks and one-off shipments, though, a roll of hand film remains indispensable.

Which thickness for which pallet weight?
Thickness in my (microns) determines how much force the film absorbs before it tears. The breakdown below works well as a starting point in practice.

Torn between two thicknesses? Take the thicker film and wrap one layer fewer. That works better than a thin film you keep having to re-anchor because it splits.
How to wrap a pallet by hand
Step by step
- Knot the film or twist it into a rope and hook it around a corner of the pallet.
- Wrap two or three turns around the pallet base so that load and pallet are tied together. This is where most of the stability is gained.
- Spiral upwards with roughly 20 cm of overlap per pass. Keep the roll low and use your body weight rather than your arms.
- Make two full turns at the top, then work your way back down.
- Tear the film off and press the end against the last layer – the film clings to itself.
Check at the end that every point of the load is covered by at least three layers of film. On a standard pallet of 1.80 m that works out at roughly nineteen laps around the pallet.
Four mistakes worth avoiding
- Wrapping only the load. Skip the pallet base and the load will still slide off.
- Too little overlap. Below 15 cm you create weak seams where the film splits open.
- Pulling too hard on thin film. The film necks down into a rope and loses grip instead of gaining it.
- Starting at the top. Work from bottom to top so rainwater cannot run in between the layers.
Working more comfortably with a dispenser
Wrapping without an aid takes its toll on your wrists, and the friction heat of the roll is unpleasant during long runs. A foil dispenser solves that: the roll turns on a spindle, you control tension with a brake, and both hands stay free to steer. In practice you wrap tighter and more evenly with a dispenser, so you reach the same stability with fewer layers.
Rolls with an extended core or a built-in handle are the cheaper alternative, particularly for occasional use and for bundling work.
Recycled and pre-stretched hand film
There are two routes to lower film consumption. Recycled hand wrapping film contains a share of reprocessed polyethylene and performs comparably to virgin film at the same thickness. Pre-stretched film has already been drawn out at the factory, so you work with a thinner, lighter film and use fewer kilos of plastic per pallet.
When unpacking, cut the film off the pallet in one movement and drop it loosely into the film container – balled-up film is often rejected at the sorting line. Cardboard cores go in with the waste paper.
Color as a warehouse tool
Besides transparent, this range includes chrome, yellow and red with black. Those colors are there to signal: a yellow wrap for urgent shipments, red with black for pallets that need checking first. When the shipment stands outdoors or travels by sea, a shrink pallet cover gives more certainty than hand film, while a top sheet is enough if only the top has to stay dry. Frequently asked questions about hand wrapping film
How many pallets will one roll cover?
With a 300 m roll and around nineteen turns per pallet you will get roughly 20 to 25 pallets in practice, depending on pallet height and how hard you pull. A dispenser usually adds a few pallets to that.
Why does my film keep tearing at the corners?
Either the film is too thin for this load or you are pulling too hard. Increase the thickness rather than the tension, or protect the sharp corners. A damaged roll edge also causes tears, so start with a fresh roll if in doubt.
What is pre-stretched hand film?
Film that has already been drawn out at the factory. It feels thinner and lighter, takes less effort to apply and uses less plastic per pallet. The trade-off is that little stretch is left, so you have to wrap more precisely.
Can I use hand wrapping film for bundling?
You can, but narrow rolls of 10 to 25 cm are handier for bundling work. They sit more lightly in the hand and you waste no width.
Should I choose 50 or 75 cm wide?
50 cm is the standard and works at any pallet height. A 75 cm roll covers more per turn, so tall pallets are finished sooner, but the roll is heavier to handle.
Is recycled film just as strong?
At the same thickness its performance is close to that of virgin film. For heavy applications, step up one thickness if in doubt, or ask us for advice.
Is manual wrapping hard on your wrists?
Over long runs it is, especially without an aid. A dispenser with a brake takes over the pulling force and makes a noticeable difference. Wrap with a straight arm and use your walking direction rather than your wrist.
When should I move to a pallet wrapper?
From around twenty pallets a day a wrapper pays for itself in film and labor. On top of that, a machine wraps every pallet with the same tension, which prevents damage claims.
