Five blankets: what that covers in practice

A crew clearing a house tends to assign the padded blankets to the same shortlist: the sofa, the dining table or loose table top, the display or sideboard cabinet - and then two are left over for whatever turns up along the way: a mirror, a television, a lacquered side unit. Each blanket consists of a filling with a spunbond top layer, quilted through with zigzag stitching that spreads load across its width. The filling is made entirely from recycled material. The spunbond on the outside is new material and provides the smooth surface that sheds no lint and transfers no colour onto lacquered wood or pale upholstery.

How do I use the carrying strap that comes with the set?

The strap runs underneath the item and is carried by two people, so the weight sits on shoulders and legs rather than fingers and lower back. Set the length so the item just clears the floor and both carriers stand upright. Always put the blanket around the item first and the strap underneath afterwards: that way the strap presses into the padding and not into the edge of the furniture.

Why five blankets and not another number?

Five is the quantity that gets one crew through a job without having to decide which item goes unpadded. Three go to the usual suspects - sofa, table top, cabinet - and two stay in reserve for whatever you meet on site. If you run two vans, take two sets.

How do I store five padded blankets without losing load space?
