A moving blanket is a heavy, densely woven or stitched blanket that you wrap around furniture, equipment or machine parts. The fabric absorbs abrasion and impact, dampens vibration during transport and keeps dust and dirt away in storage. For single use, protective film is often cheaper; for repeated moves and relocations, a moving blanket pays for itself quickly.
An old woollen blanket looks like a workable stopgap, but it rarely survives professional use. Moving blankets differ on three fundamental points.
Our blankets are made from a cotton blend of recycled textile fibres. Cotton is known for its high tensile strength: the fabric barely stretches and will not tear along a sharp furniture edge. Wool is soft but slack and gives way under moderate load.
Every blanket is stitched or hemmed around the full perimeter, so the edge does not fray when the blanket is dragged over a pallet corner or a tail lift – precisely where cheap blankets fail first.
At roughly 1,100 to 1,550 grams per blanket, the material has enough mass to stay in place on a glossy lacquered cabinet, even when the van brakes or corners. Lightweight blankets slide off and expose exactly the vulnerable corner you were trying to protect.

Stitched blankets consist of compressed fibres with a quilted finish. They are slightly less robust than woven blankets, which makes them the logical choice for static situations: furniture stored for months in a warehouse or container, or goods that need shielding from dust and light.
Woven blankets have a closed, firm structure and withstand repeated sliding, folding and tensioning. Removal firms, hauliers and installation engineers choose this version because the blanket goes in and out of the van every single day.
On a roll, you decide the length yourself. Useful for awkward dimensions: a long workbench, a machine bed or the side panel of a trailer. Simply cut the length you need and avoid being left with half-used blankets.
The padded 183 x 203 cm version has a thicker filling and a larger surface area. This size wraps a double-door wardrobe, a fridge or a sofa in one go, without having to layer several blankets.
Grey blankets with white, yellow or red stripes are recognisable at a glance. If you work with several crews or subcontractors, each colour can be assigned to a van – which saves hunting and losses at the end of the day.
Blankets get dirty during a move, and that is no reason to write them off. Unpadded blankets can be washed by hand or in the machine at a maximum of 30 °C. Wash without fabric softener, as it reduces the grip of the weave, and air dry rather than tumble dry. Please note: the padded 183 x 203 cm blankets are not machine washable. Keep these clean by brushing them out and spot-cleaning with a damp cloth.

A moving blanket is woven, making it stronger and better suited to repeated use. A storage blanket is stitched, slightly less strong and intended for longer, stationary covering. In everyday use the two terms are often interchanged.
For individual items such as chairs, bedside tables and tabletops, 150 x 200 cm is sufficient. For tall wardrobes, fridges and sofas, 150 x 300 cm or the padded 183 x 203 cm works better, because the blanket reaches all the way round in one go.
The roll version is designed for exactly that. It is better not to cut individual blankets: the stitched edge disappears and the fabric starts to fray along the cut.
The stripes act as an identifier. They show at a glance which set belongs to which crew, van or customer, which makes collecting and counting blankets after a job considerably easier.
For short outdoor spells, such as loading and unloading, they perform well. They are not waterproof: in rain or during prolonged outdoor storage, combine the blanket with a tarpaulin or with protective film.
Under normal professional use, a good blanket lasts for years. What matters most is folding rather than bunching, storing dry, and not dragging it across rough concrete.
