In floriculture, tree nursery cultivation and potted plant cultivation, everything revolves around a living product that must still look just as good upon arrival as it did in the greenhouse. Between potting and delivery lies a chain of actions — tying, sorting, sleeving, wrapping and loading — in which the packaging material determines whether your plants arrive intact, fresh and presentable at the auction, retailer or end customer. Material that is too tight, does not allow air through or leaves adhesive residue behind will cost you quality immediately and therefore margin.

Binding material: guide, tie and bundle

A young tree that sinks off at an angle or a climbing plant that loses its support will not make it through sorting. Good binding material keeps the crop in place without cutting into the bark or stem, and lasts a whole growing season under UV light, moisture and temperature fluctuations. Kortpack supplies binding material in two main forms: twist ties made of steel wire and plastic tyraps.

Twist ties for tree growing and crop wire

Twist ties are short pieces of steel wire with an eye at both ends: you place the tie around the trunk and the stake, twist the eyes together a few turns and the connection is secure. The plastic-coated version has a green PVC jacket that shields the wire from the bark — important for avenue trees, espalier trees and perennial plants that remain tied to their support for months or years. Copper-coated and galvanized twist ties are available for applications where the jacket is not needed, such as fastening mesh, crop wire and greenhouse constructions or quickly closing bags. Available in wire thicknesses from 1.0 to 1.6 mm and lengths from 100 to 750 mm.

Tyraps for quick, reusable bundles

When speed matters, use tyraps made of polyamide 6.6. They fasten in one motion, can be trimmed to size with pliers and keep crop wire, hoses, drip lines and cable trays neatly in place in the greenhouse. If you work outdoors or in a greenhouse with lots of light, choose extra UV-resistant tyraps or black tyraps, which retain their tensile strength much longer than a standard natural-colour tie. Releasable tyraps can be loosened and reused, for example for bundles that still change composition during sorting. For extra heavy or chemically demanding applications there are stainless steel tyraps. With more than 300 variants, you will almost always find the length and width that suits your crop.

Single-side adhesive wrapping film: hand and machine rolls

Regular stretch film sticks to everything it touches — including pot rims and the coating on your carts. In single-side adhesive wrapping film the adhesive layer is only on the inner side. The film therefore adheres only to itself: the load is tightly enclosed, while the outside remains dry and smooth, allowing plant carts and Danish carts to stand close together during transport. When moving the carts, the film does not tear. Exactly what you want for a product that must go straight onto the shop floor after unpacking.

Hand rolls for loose carts and small batches

With a hand roll, you can wrap a single cart, a pallet of potted plants or a bundle of stakes without a machine. The 45 cm x 300 meter version in 12 my is a commonly used size for light to medium loads; if you work a lot with a dispenser, also take a look at our packaging accessories.

Machine rolls for continuous production

If you wrap dozens of carts or pallets every day, a wrapping machine quickly pays for itself: constant pre-stretch, lower film consumption per load and no shoulder strain for your staff. The machine stretch film in single-side adhesive version can be matched to the stretch ratios of your machine. For mixed loads, combine the film with strapping material or corner profiles, so that the top layers do not collapse.

Wrap net and perforated film for Danish carts

A full cart of plants tightly wrapped with closed film will start to sweat. Condensation between the film and the leaves causes leaf spots, botrytis and limp tops within a day — especially in summer or during a journey of several days. With wrap net and perforated film you keep the load just as stable, while air can still flow through the cart.

Wrap net: maximum ventilation

Wrap net is an open, stretchable net structure that you wrap around Danish carts, CC containers and flower carts. The net keeps pots, sleeves and loose branches securely in place and lets almost all air through. Available as a hand roll of 50 cm x 500 meters for loose carts and as a machine roll of 50 cm x 3500 meters for growers working with a wrapping machine. An added benefit: driver and recipient can see at a glance what is on the cart, which helps with inspection at the unloading site.

Perforated film and slit film: grip with airflow

Perforated film (also called slit film or ventilated stretch film) is stretch film with perforations or elongated slits. You get more enclosure and dust protection than with net, while still maintaining sufficient ventilation for living material. The 48 cm x 300 meter version in 17 my is single-side adhesive and therefore safe for leaves and pots. Perforated film is also practical for bulb crops, propagating material and fresh products that need to lose moisture during transport. If the batch then goes into cold storage or onto the outdoor area, also take a look at top sheets and shrink hoods.

Plastic bags for root balls, substrate and waste removal

The plastic bags from Kortpack are flat LDPE bags without side gussets: transparent, flexible and tear-resistant. They keep moisture, dust and dirt out — or in, if you want to keep a root ball moist until planting time. Because the bags are transparent, the contents remain visible during sorting and scanning.

From 20 my to 150 my: choose by thickness

Thickness determines the application. Thin bags from 20 to 40 my are used for light items: labels, plant supports, small by-products and covering clean material. Around 50 my you get a bag with the strength of a standard carrier bag, suitable for root balls, pots and sale-ready bundles. From 100 my and up, we speak of a rubble bag quality that can withstand pruning waste, potting soil residues and sharp stems. The bags are available in widths from 10 to 100 cm and lengths from 20 to 150 cm, so there is also a suitable size for long cuttings or tall growing pots.

Additional options for nursery and sales

If you pack small batches of seed, cuttings or parts, then reclosable bags are more convenient. For cutting sleeves to size around trees or tall plants, tube film works better, and for disposing of large quantities of soil or green waste there are big bags and waste bags. Frequently asked questions from plant growers

Why choose single-side adhesive film instead of regular stretch film?

With regular stretch film, the film is rough on both sides. It then also “sticks” to pot rims and the coating on your carts, and can cause the plant carts to stick together when loading and unloading the truck, and the film to tear. Single-side adhesive film sticks only on the inside and is smooth on the outside. The load is just as tight, but it works much more easily.

When do I use wrap net and when do I use perforated film?

Wrap net has the most open structure and therefore the best ventilation; that is the logical choice for full plant carts, especially in warm periods or on longer journeys. Perforated film encloses the load more tightly and keeps out more dust and draught, with perforations for airflow. For mixed or tall carts, growers often combine the two: net around the sides, film around the lower layers.

Which twist tie should I use for young trees?

For young trees and espalier trees we recommend a plastic-coated twist tie. The PVC jacket lies softly against the bark and prevents girdling during diameter growth. Choose the length so that you can place the tie loosely around trunk and stake — a tie that you have to pull tight is too short.

Are tyraps resistant to sunlight in the greenhouse?

A standard white tyrap becomes brittle under prolonged UV exposure. If you work in a greenhouse with lots of light or outdoors, choose black or extra UV-resistant tyraps. For extra heavy or chemically demanding environments, stainless steel tyraps are the safest choice.

What thickness plastic bag do I need for root balls?

For root balls and pots, 50 my works best in practice: sturdy enough to lift, flexible enough to fold tightly around the root ball. If it concerns pruning waste, potting soil residues or sharp stems, choose 100 my or thicker.

Can I also process wrap net with my existing wrapping machine?

Yes, wrap net is available as a machine roll of 50 cm x 3500 meters. Keep in mind that net has less stretch than film; the machine’s pre-tension must be set accordingly. Our staff will be happy to help you determine the correct setting.

Can I have packaging printed with my own company name?

Yes, you can. Think of printed hand stretch film, machine film, tube film or stickers with your logo or growing information. You can find the options at printed packaging.
