The mid-range black Ty-Rap: Thomas & Betts TY5242MXR, 204 x 3.6 mm

Between the light miniature ties and the heavy wide types sits a size that, in practice, is surprisingly often the right one: the TY5242MXR. Since 2007, we have been the go-to wholesaler for Thomas & Betts cable ties, and customers choose this tie when an outdoor bundle has to do more than stay together and must also cope with pull or weight. The 3.6 mm strap is rated at 178 N, more than twice a 2.4 mm tie, and closes around bundles from 2 to 51 mm.

The strap is black polyamide 6.6, stabilised against weather and UV radiation and free of halogens. The flat head holds a 316 stainless steel barb that sets into the serration-free strap, so you can tension steplessly without the lock creeping back. Thanks to the UV-resistant black colour and an operating temperature of up to +105 °C, this tie lasts in places exposed to wind and weather. The wider strap also spreads the clamping force over the cable sheath better than a narrow tie.

Both are about 20 cm long and black. The TY5232MXR is 2.4 mm wide and rated at 80 N, the TY5242MXR is 3.6 mm wide and rated at 178 N. If the bundle really has to hold something, the wider version is the safe choice.

Is this size also available in a larger pack?

Yes. The TY242MX is the black version from the same size range, packed in 1000s. The TY5242MXR in a bag of 100 is handy for projects and service work.

Up to what temperature can the tie be used?

According to the manufacturer, from -60 °C to +105 °C. When fitting it, the temperature should be at least -30 °C.
