Securing small bundles outdoors calls for a tie that is short, locks reliably and stands up to sun and weather. That is exactly what the TY523MXR is built for. Since 2007, we have been the go-to wholesaler for Thomas & Betts cable ties, and this short black version is a regular in the vans of solar installers and outdoor lighting fitters. At 92 mm long it bundles 1.5 to 16 mm, so there is no long tail to cut off.

The material is black, weather- and UV-stabilised polyamide 6.6, halogen-free. Locking is done by a 316 stainless steel barb in the low-profile head, which presses into the smooth strap and holds it at any position you choose. A plastic pawl can give way under heat or vibration; a metal barb does not. Similar versions can be found under metal tooth cable ties.

The black version is UV resistant and can be used from -60 °C to +105 °C. That makes this short tie a good fit for locations that get hot in summer and very cold in winter.

What is the difference between the TY523MXR and the TY523MR?

Dimensions and locking are identical. The TY523MXR is black and UV resistant, so it is suitable for outdoor use. The natural TY523MR is intended for indoor use, for example in control panels.

Can I fit this tie in freezing weather?

Yes. For this black version the manufacturer specifies a minimum installation temperature of -30 °C. Once fitted, the tie can be used from -60 °C.

Why is a metal barb better than a plastic pawl?

The stainless barb bites straight into the strap and keeps holding even when heat, cold or vibration put the tie under stress. You can also tension it steplessly rather than tooth by tooth.
