Black Thomas & Betts cable ties with metal barb for indoor and outdoor use

Since 2007, we have been the go-to wholesaler for Thomas & Betts cable ties. This category contains the black Ty-Rap cable ties: the version installers choose whenever a bundle has to stay put outdoors, in direct sunlight or in a warm environment. The black pigment makes the nylon UV resistant, so the tie does not turn brittle in sunlight.

The difference from an ordinary cable tie is in the head. Thomas & Betts fits a 316 stainless steel barb that bites into the strap, so the tie can be locked at any tension, will not slip back and stays tight under vibration. Ty-Rap was invented in 1958 for the aviation industry and has been a byword in electrical installation ever since.

Which black Ty-Rap should you choose?

Length determines the maximum bundle diameter; width determines how much load the tie can take. A narrow 2.4 mm tie suits fine wiring in control cabinets, while the wide 6.9 to 8.1 mm versions secure heavy cables and hoses.

Packed in 50, 100, 500 or 1000 pieces

Many sizes come in a bulk pack for projects and in a small bag of 50 or 100 for the service van. You can tell by the part number: a code starting with TY5 (for example TY525MXR) is usually the small pack of the same tie.

Frequently asked questions about black cable ties with metal barb

Why choose a cable tie with a metal barb?

The stainless steel barb locks the strap at any position along its length. A plastic pawl works with teeth and can give slightly under vibration or heat; the metal barb holds the tension.

Are black cable ties better outdoors than white ones?

Yes. The black pigment protects the nylon against UV radiation. Natural (white) cable ties are not UV resistant and are intended for indoor use.

Can I install the ties in freezing conditions?

According to Thomas & Betts, black Ty-Rap ties can be installed down to -30 °C. Once installed, they keep performing down to -60 °C.
