That sounds like a contradiction and it is not, because thick board is wasted weight when the contents are light. The size is 400 x 400 x 250 mm in 3 mm B-flute. Anyone who needs to fit heavier goods onto this footprint is better off with the 4 mm C-flute or with double wall shipping boxes. Those have a thicker wall and take more stacking pressure. For light items 3 mm B-flute remains the smarter choice, because you are not shipping board weight you do not need.

Why is this height in 3 mm while the shallower one is in 4 mm?

Because they are meant for different work. The taller 3 mm box takes bulky lightweight goods, the shallower 4 mm version heavier or more delicate items. The footprint and the pallet pattern match on both.

Does a forty-litre box hold its shape?

It does if you fill it properly. Void space is the most common cause of bulging walls on thin board. Pack out with paper or film until the contents can no longer move around inside.

What is the best way to close this box?

One strip of tape along the centre seam is enough for light contents. If the box is filled to the brim, tape the short seams as well so the flaps cannot pull open.
