Anyone storing paperwork needs a size in which A4 files lie flat instead of tipping over. An A4 lever arch file measures around 320 x 285 mm, so it rests flat on the base of 394 x 294 x 188 mm: wide files stack in two layers, narrow spines even in three. Since 2007, we have been the go-to wholesaler for cardboard boxes, and questions about archiving almost always end up at this size.
The quality is 3 mm single wall corrugated board with a B-flute. Paper is heavy, but its weight sits evenly across the whole base, and that is precisely where single wall board performs. If the boxes have to stand stacked high for years, double wall shipping boxes are the calmer choice. Everything is supplied flat, so you can cover your archive needs in one go.
Archive and administration: files, A4 binders and suspension folders neatly side by side.
Office move: a box that is still liftable when full, instead of an oversized one nobody picks up.
Sending printed matter: manuals, catalogues and brochures to branches or to a trade fair.

The figure quoted is the internal size. Because of the 3 mm wall thickness, the external size runs a few millimetres higher on each side. Allow for that if the boxes have to fit an archive rack with fixed shelf openings.
Spread the load evenly over the bottom and tape the base seam in an H shape. Lift the filled box from underneath rather than by the top flaps, which keeps the glued seam out of trouble.
You can, but the load bearing strength of corrugated board sits in the corners and in the upright flute direction. Place filled boxes on their base by preference and not on a side panel.
