The only difference from the 400 mm version is the height, and that difference is bigger than it looks: you gain over 45 litres, or a quarter more capacity, while the footprint stays the same. Your pallet pattern and racking layout therefore do not change. Since 2007, we have been the go-to wholesaler for double wall shipping boxes, and we regularly see customers stocking both heights side by side.

At 500 mm high, two layers fit on a pallet within a standard height of around 1150 mm. If you double-stack your lorry, that leaves you some margin below the pallet above.

Volumetric weight: the point to watch

226 litres means a volumetric weight of around 45 kg with parcel carriers. That is usually above the rate you would pay for the actual contents. For this size, pallet or groupage transport is therefore often cheaper than a parcel shipment, just as it is with pallet boxes. If in doubt, let us take a look before you buy a large batch.

✔ Sack truck or pallet truck – the safest route for contents over 25 kg.
✔ Straight stack – place boxes corner on corner, as that is where corrugated board gets its strength.

As soon as your contents just do not fit in the lower box, or you want to add a second layer. Because the footprint is identical, you can keep both heights on the same pallet and in the same racking.

Can this box still go with a parcel service?

Technically often yes, but with a volumetric weight of around 45 kg it is rarely cost-effective. Compare the rate with a pallet shipment before you decide.

How do I stop the contents settling in transit?

Fill the box to just below the flaps and put the heaviest items at the bottom. Space above the contents lets the top flaps bend as soon as a second box is placed on top.
