Cardboard boxes 400 x 400 x 400 mm – the 64-litre cube

Three equal sides of 400 mm give an internal volume of around 64 litres. That is a lot of space in a box you can still carry with two hands. A cube also packs predictably: wherever you place the contents, the distance to the wall is the same all round. Since 2007, we have been the go-to wholesaler for cardboard boxes in the larger sizes, and this cube is the clearest example.

With this much volume, wall thickness is no detail. A 400 mm tall box in single wall board starts to bulge as soon as pressure is applied. The 7 mm double BC flute keeps all four side walls flat, even when the box is full of light but bulky goods that offer hardly any counter-pressure.

How much weight can a box of this volume hold?

At this size, the strength of double wall board is rarely the limiting factor; the lifting limit of the person handling it is more likely to be. For manual handling, keep to a practical maximum and spread the weight over the base.

Does this size still fall under a standard parcel rate?

At 400 mm in all three directions, most carriers will put you in a higher volume band. Check your carrier's volumetric (dimensional) weight calculation before making this size your standard.

How do I keep a cube stable while filling it?

Seal the bottom completely first, including across the short flaps. A cube with a loosely taped base will give way as soon as weight goes in.
