Why is this such an unusual size?

Because it wasn't designed around the box, but around the contents. A few millimetres' deviation from a round number usually means the format has been matched to an existing inner pack.

What is the minimum clearance I should allow?

Allow five to ten millimetres per side for the product itself. If your contents are fragile, keep at least two centimetres, so a proper layer of void fill fits in between.

Are the stated dimensions the internal dimensions?

Yes, 372 x 282 x 271 mm are the internal dimensions. Due to the 7 mm wall thickness per side, the external dimensions are slightly larger, which matters if the box has to fit into a crate or on a shelf.
