They are indispensable aids in the workplace and also in everyday life and for the hobby handyman, fastening materials are regularly useful. One variant ('cable tie') has a slightly more revealing name than the other ('shrink tubing'), and the applications of the different closure materials vary but also overlap here and there. Wondering which sealing material is the best option for your job and which types are eligible? We explain the most important types for you.

Cable ties: closing, bundling

One knows them as cable ties, the other calls them tyraps. Cable ties and tyraps are synonymous with the same mounting material: a thin (usually) plastic strap with a slot on one side, through which the other end can be pulled for a permanent attachment.

Tyraps are strong and very easy and fast to use. They are also available in many different shapes and sizes, making these cable ties suitable for a variety of applications. The name says it all, they are often used for tying (electricity) cables together. But a tyrap is also a low-threshold solution for closing bags or connecting 2 objects.

Loop wires: closing, bundling

Similar in application but perhaps slightly less commonly known are loop wires. These metal wires with eyes at each end are just as user-friendly and versatile in use. They can be closed by hand (just like you would close a sandwich bag with a closing strip) or even faster and more accurately with the help of a drill tying device.

Because loop wires are made of thin metal, they are both very strong and flexible in use. Many different sizes are available, with lengths up to 16 cm. This makes loop wires a popular tool for sealing large plastic bags. In addition, they are also used for bundling and fastening materials to fencing and grilles, and for fastening underfloor heating nets.

Heat shrink tubing: bundle, insulate

The heat shrink tubing is slightly less accessible to use, but very useful for various (industrial) jobs. You cannot attach heat shrink tubing with bare hands, a heating element must be used here. A characteristic of heat shrink tubing is that this thin PVC tube shrinks in diameter (and not in length) at a certain temperature, from a degree or 90°C.

When shrinking by heat, the heat shrink tubing pulls snugly around the underlying cables or wires. This makes this closure material suitable for connections where there is an unequal diameter or shape. Heat shrink tubing bundles, insulates and also makes the cables stronger. These straps are also available in different lengths and diameters.

Spiral belt: bundling

Spiral belt is less versatile than the aforementioned closure materials, but excels in its own application. Spiral tape is also known as cable bundle, and this is exactly what this tool is for: bundling cables, wires and cords. The great advantage of spiral belt is that it is twisted around the cables in a spiral with open slots. As a result, there is an opening at any desired location, so that the cables can run out at any point for a split.
