Why use flat head cable ties on playground equipment?
Flat head cable ties are the low-profile option within our cable ties range. Three properties make them particularly suited to playground equipment.
1. Protection of the underlying material
On a regular cable tie, the ribs sit on the inside. On a flat head tie it is the other way round: the ribs are on the outside and the inside is smooth. That smooth inner face lies flat against the material and prevents damage to the underlying material. No marks or cuts are left behind in foam profiles, powder-coated tubing or plastic components.
2. Suitable for tight spaces
The head of a flat head cable tie is considerably flatter than that of a standard tyrap. This makes installation possible in confined situations, for example between two closely spaced tubes or behind a panel with very little access.
3. No sharp edges
Once the tie is closed and trimmed, the end retracts slightly into the head. No protruding piece of strap is left behind, which minimises the risk of injury. That is exactly what makes the difference in a place where children run their hands along the structure.
Are cable ties safe enough for playground equipment?
Yes — flat head cable ties are a trusted solution in playground construction, precisely because they are gentle on the material and leave no sharp edges. They are widely used for parts such as foam profiles, cables, nets and covers. Use the assembly instructions from the equipment manufacturer as your guide: they set out which fastener belongs where, and that varies from one piece of equipment to the next.

How much will one tie hold?
This version has a tensile strength of 79.4 kg and can enclose a bundle of up to 102 mm in diameter. Always allow a generous margin between the rated strength and the actual load.
And in winter?
The processing and application range runs from -40 °C to +80 °C, so a northern European winter is no problem. If you are installing in a permanently colder or warmer environment, take a look at our cold-resistant or heat-resistant versions.
Keeping fastenings discreet on colourful playground equipment
Playground equipment tends to be strikingly colourful, and then it helps if the fastening material does not stand out. Flat head cable ties are therefore available in various colours, so they blend discreetly into the design. Want the fastening to disappear altogether? Take a look at our cable ties in various colours as well.
Which colour for outdoor use? Mind the UV resistance
This is the key consideration for outdoor use. Only the black tyraps are UV resistant; coloured versions weather under sunlight and may break over time. If the equipment stands outdoors, choose black everywhere the tie is exposed to daylight and use coloured ties only indoors or at sheltered points. For applications with particularly heavy sun exposure we also stock extra UV resistant tyraps.
How to fit a flat head cable tie
The procedure barely differs from that of an ordinary nylon cable tie:
- Place the cable tie around the part that needs to be secured.
- Feed the end of the tie through the head.
- Pull the tie tight, by hand or with tyrap pliers for an even tension.
- Cut off the excess end close to the head.
- Check that the end has retracted into the head and that no sharp edge remains.
After installation, check the tension of every tyrap once more and include the fastenings in your periodic inspection round. Replace any cable tie that shows weathering or cuts straight away.
Do you need tools?
Tightening by hand is possible, but for larger quantities a pair of tyrap pliers works faster and delivers an even tension. The pliers also cut the end off flush, so no sharp edge is left behind.
Can a flat head cable tie be released again?
No, this is a non-reusable cable tie: the locking mechanism works in one direction only. If you want to be able to readjust or reuse the fastening later, choose a resealable version from our cable ties range.
Other applications for flat head cable ties
Beyond playground construction, these ties are used elsewhere too, precisely because they are gentle on the underlying material:
- Indoor and outdoor playgrounds: securing foam profiles around the tubing of playground equipment.
- Electrical engineering industry: fixing insulation material without damaging the sheath.
- Interior fit-out and set building: fastenings that stay visible and therefore need a flat, safe finish.
Do you need a permanent fixing to a wall, tube or frame? Combine the cable ties with our fastening materials, such as adhesive mounts, screw mounts and pipe clamps. For heavy structures, heavy duty tyraps are worth considering.
