Shrink guns: film pulled tight around the load in seconds

A shrink gun is a gas burner with a wide, directed flame: you run it along the film, the material contracts and closes tightly around the load. No power supply, no warm-up time – just a propane cylinder and a few minutes.

In our range you work with the Ripack 3000 and the Rafale 4040. Both run on propane, both are supplied complete with a pressure regulator in a carrying case, and both are built for daily use in a dispatch department or on a building site.

How does a shrink gun work?

The burner mixes propane with air to produce a fan-shaped flame. That flame does not touch the film long enough to burn it, but long enough for the molecules to spring back to their original shape – the shrink effect. You work from the bottom upwards and keep the gun moving; standing still is the one reliable way to burn a hole.

Gas pressure is set on the regulator. Low pressure for thin film and detailed work, high pressure when you are clearing volume. That is what determines output in practice: the same tool delivers considerably less heat at 1.5 bar than at 3.5 bar.

Which shrink gun suits your situation?

Ripack 3000: the fastest tool for high volumes

The Ripack 3000 delivers an adjustable 45 to 80 kW and is rated by the manufacturer for around 100 to 150 pallets a day. The gun weighs about 1,250 grams and has a patented stainless steel combustion nozzle that stays cold on the outside. The Securipack system monitors cylinder pressure and shuts off the gas automatically if the hose is damaged. Ripack provides a ten-year warranty on parts and labour, excluding the lance. This is the one to choose when shrinking is a fixed part of your daily output.

Rafale 4040: a complete set for regular use

The Rafale 4040 from Guilbert Express produces 24 kW at 1.5 bar, rising to 44 kW at 3.5 bar. At roughly 1.2 kilos it is a light tool. Ignition is synchronised: gas only flows once the flame lights, and releasing the safety lever stops the tool immediately. The twin aluminium handle stays cool even after a long run. The set comes with ten metres of gas hose, a pressure regulator with gauge, gloves, a spare piezo and a hanging hook – so you can start straight away.

What do you use a shrink gun for?

Covering pallets

The classic application: you pull a shrink pallet cover over the loaded pallet and shrink it all round. The film closes over the pallet edge, so the load travels as one unit and rain, dust and dirt stay out. To secure the pallet mechanically as well, combine this with strapping materials.

Bundling and wrapping with film from the roll

For window frames, tubes, machine parts or stacked panels you work with shrink film from the roll. You cut to size, seal and shrink the film tightly around the product.

Outdoor storage and transport

Machinery on a building site, equipment in winter storage, boats ashore: a shrunk film skin is the quickest way to close off a load watertight for months. Where heat cannot or may not be used, stretch film remains the alternative – it stretches instead of shrinking and needs no gas burner.

Working safely with a shrink gun

Always work in a well-ventilated space or outdoors, and keep a fire extinguisher within reach. Stand the gas cylinder upright and clear of walkways, check the hose for cracks before use, and wear gloves. Both tools shut off the gas as soon as you release the lever, but that is no substitute for attention: never put down a lit gun, and after work close the valve on the cylinder, not just the one on the gun.

Frequently asked questions about shrink guns

How much output do I need?

That depends on your volume. If you shrink the occasional pallet or bundle products, a tool in the Rafale 4040 class is more than enough. If you handle dozens to well over a hundred pallets a day, the Ripack 3000 saves you seconds every time – and that adds up quickly.

What gas does a shrink gun run on?

Propane from a cylinder. Butane is not recommended, as it builds too little pressure at low temperatures. The supplied regulator connects to the cylinder.

Do I need anything besides the gun itself?

A propane cylinder is always extra; these are usually sourced locally against a deposit. The Rafale 4040 arrives complete with hose, regulator and gloves. With the Ripack 3000 the regulator is in the case; hose and extension wands are ordered separately.

Can a shrink gun also handle film from the roll?

Yes. The wide flame pattern is designed precisely to heat large surfaces evenly, whether that is a pallet hood or film you have cut to size yourself.

How long does it take to shrink one pallet?

With a properly set tool, about a minute for a standard one-metre-high pallet. Lower gas pressure or a cold warehouse will extend that.

What is the difference between the Ripack 3000 and the Rafale 4040?

In short: speed and warranty versus completeness and price. The Ripack 3000 delivers more output, has a cold combustion nozzle. The Rafale 4040 is lighter, comes as a complete set.

May I use a shrink gun indoors?

Yes, provided the space is well ventilated and no flammable material is nearby. Combustion releases CO₂, which is undesirable in a closed room without extraction.
