A foil dispenser is the hand tool that holds a roll of [stretch film](en/wrapping-film-shrink-film-top-sheets-pallets/stretch-film-wrap-film) while you wrap. The roll turns on a spindle, or between two caps pressed into the core, and you walk around the load with the handle in your hand. Simple enough, but it changes three things at once: the roll stays square to the load, you decide how much tension goes into the film, and your fingers never touch the moving edge of the roll. Wrap without a tool and you carry the roll itself. The film then runs off at an angle, the tension varies from turn to turn, and the edge of the roll heats up against your fingers as soon as you pick up speed. A dispenser removes all three problems in one go. ### Less film per pallet The real gain is in the stretch. Hand wrapping film only develops its holding power once you pull it out; with a dispenser you pull evenly and get more stretch out of the same metres. In practice that means the same load stability with fewer turns, and a roll that lasts noticeably longer. Wrap a handful of pallets a week and you will hardly notice; wrap dozens a week and the tool pays for itself. ### Easier on wrists and back Wrapping is repetitive work. A dispenser with a proper handle lets you work with your arm extended and put the tension in with your walking direction instead of your wrist. The bottom turns around the pallet are easier to place too, because you can carry the roll low without crouching. ## Which types of foil dispenser are available? They weigh almost nothing, cost very little and keep your hands off the edge of the film. For anyone who wraps the odd pallet or bundle, that is often all that is needed. What you do not get is a brake: every bit of tension has to come from your own counter-pull. ### Dispensers with a frame and a handle The classic foil dispenser: a metal or plastic frame with a spindle through the core and a handle at the side. The roll hangs free, you walk around the pallet and the film comes off the roll evenly. The budget version is built for the common 45 and 50 cm rolls; the light plastic version takes widths from 25 to 50 cm, which is useful if you also run narrow rolls or [coloured wrapping film](en/wrapping-film-shrink-film-top-sheets-pallets/stretch-film-wrap-film/colored-wrap-film) alongside your standard pallet film. ### The chrome-plated version If you wrap every day, this is the model that makes the difference. Both the budget dispenser and this version have a brake: the roll does not over-run when you pause, so the film stays under constant tension and each turn pulls tighter without you having to pull harder yourself. What sets this version apart is the build. The frame is considerably heavier and chrome-plated, which is what makes it stand up to daily use and to the knocks a dispenser inevitably takes in a dispatch area. It takes rolls from 30 to 50 cm wide. ### A dispenser for mini rolls For [mini stretch film](en/wrapping-film-shrink-film-top-sheets-pallets/stretch-film-wrap-film/mini-stretchfilm) there is a separate, compact dispenser for rolls with a 38 mm core. You hold it in one hand and turn it around the bundle, which makes it ideal for cables, tubes, profiles and loose items. Some mini rolls come with a handle moulded into the core; a separate dispenser is then not strictly necessary, but it will outlast that supplied handle many times over. ## Choosing the right dispenser Two things decide whether a dispenser fits your rolls: the width of the film and the diameter of the core. Run through these points before you order. And if you are in any doubt about the combination with the film you currently run, let us know which rolls you use and we will work it out for you. ## Getting the most out of a dispenser A dispenser only earns its keep if it is used as intended. Four points from the shop floor: - **Start at the pallet itself.** Two turns around the bottom case *and* the pallet anchor the load; from there you spiral upwards. - **Walk, do not pull.** Keep your arm extended and let your walking direction create the tension. That is gentler on the wrist and gives a far more even result. - **Overlap by about half.** On a 50 cm roll you move up roughly 25 cm per pass, so that every point ends up with two layers of film. - **Let the brake do the work.** The roll should hold back rather than spin along freely; that is where the stretch comes from. With thin film, keep the tension a little lower than with thick film. If the film keeps tearing in the same spot, check the edge of the roll and any protruding parts of the load before you reach for a heavier gauge. ## Maintenance and service life A foil dispenser is simple equipment that will last for years. Keep the spindle clean and free of film residue, because that is where most of the friction builds up. A drop of oil on the pivot points keeps the roll turning smoothly. On the versions with a brake, check now and again that the setting has not worked loose; a brake shaken out of adjustment explains a great many complaints about slack wraps. Plastic caps are wearing parts. You get more stretch out of the same metres and need fewer turns for the same stability. How much you save depends on your working method and on the film, but with daily wrapping the difference is clear. ### Does every roll of stretch film fit every dispenser? No. Check the roll width and the core diameter. A dispenser for hand rolls is too large for mini rolls with a 38 mm core, and a 50 cm roll will not go into a holder built for 30 cm. ### What is the difference between caps and a dispenser with a frame? Caps press into the core and let the roll spin freely in your hands; a framed dispenser has a handle, so you carry the roll beside you. Caps are cheap and light, while a framed dispenser wraps tighter and is far more comfortable on larger volumes. ### What is the brake for? The brake holds the roll back, so the film comes off under tension rather than simply unrolling. That stretches the film further and tightens the wrap without you having to pull harder. ### Do I need a dispenser for mini stretch film? Not necessarily: many mini rolls have a handle in the core. If you bundle regularly, a proper mini dispenser is more comfortable to work with and lasts far longer than the supplied handle. ### At what point does a pallet wrapper become worthwhile? As a rule of thumb, from around twenty pallets a day. Below that, wrapping by hand with a dispenser is quicker and cheaper; above it, a [pallet wrapper](en/wrapping-film-shrink-film-top-sheets-pallets/stretch-film-wrap-film/palletwrappers) wins on time, film consumption and consistent quality. ### Can I run one-sided adhesive film on a dispenser? Yes. [One-sided adhesive wrapping film](en/wrapping-film-shrink-film-top-sheets-pallets/stretch-film-wrap-film/stretch-film-stretch-wrap-one-sided-adhesive) is handled just like ordinary hand film; just make sure the roll sits in the holder so that the clinging face points towards the load. ### Are these dispensers suitable for left-handed users? The models with a vertical handle work equally well in either hand, and you choose your own walking direction. Only when setting the brake is it handy to turn the dispenser round. ### Which roll width should I choose to go with my dispenser? For pallets, 45 and 50 cm are the standard widths and fit every version except the mini dispenser. Narrower rolls from 25 cm call for the light plastic dispenser, which is built to take them.
