# Printed barrier tape, 2 colours ## Printed barrier tape in 2 colours Since 2007, we have been the go-to wholesaler for printed barrier tape, and a two-colour print is where that experience really shows. With two print colours you separate the message from the emblem: your logo appears in your brand colour, while the warning text is set in a second, strongly contrasting colour. Anyone walking past the cordon can see at a glance both who closed off the area and why. The tape is produced to order from 60 micron LDPE film. It is tear-resistant enough to stay taut over long runs and takes up the ink of both print passes evenly, so solid areas and lettering stay closed. ## When is a two-colour print the right choice? ### Combining brand identity and warning A single-colour print forces a choice: either your brand or your message. Two colours remove that compromise. Set your logo in your corporate red or blue and print “No entry” or “Work in progress” alongside it in black: the emblem builds recognition while the text does the safety work. Contractors, utility companies, event agencies and security services can then use one and the same tape on site and around a public area. A second colour used as an accent – a bar behind the text, an arrow or a line along the edges – also gives the print rhythm without costing legibility. ### Legibility at a distance Barrier tape is rarely read close up; most people see it from five to twenty metres away. At that range, colour contrast decides how quickly the message registers. Dark ink on light tape reads most sharply: black or dark blue on white or yellow stays clear even at dusk or in the rain. On dark tape you reverse the relationship and choose light ink, such as white, gold or silver on black. We turn that into a print layout at actual width, showing you how the two colours relate to each other and to the colour of the tape. Only once you approve it does the tape go into production. The print then runs continuously along the entire length of the roll. ### Choosing the tape and ink colour On white tape you are completely free in your colour choice – the obvious basis when both brand colours have to be reproduced exactly. On red, yellow, green, blue or orange tape, black is usually the first print colour because it delivers the highest contrast; the second colour is then reserved for the logo or an accent. Black tape is printed in gold, silver or bronze, which looks suitably formal at openings, exhibition stands and ceremonial cordons. If you are in doubt, hold the tape colour against your brand colours before deciding: the film always tints the result slightly. ### The minimum order quantity The minimum order is 1500 metres: 6 rolls of 250 metres. With two colours the tape goes through two print passes, using a second printing plate and a second ink set. That involves one-off set-up costs and makes the price per metre slightly higher than for single-colour [printed barrier tape](en/barrier-tape/printed). The extra cost pays off as soon as your logo loses its recognisability without the second colour, or when you want to show brand and warning side by side. On larger quantities the set-up is spread over more metres, so the difference per metre becomes small. ### May the two colours touch or overlap? Preferably not. Because the tape is printed in two passes and the film moves fractionally in the process, the registration – the alignment of the two colours – carries a small tolerance. Leave a thin white gap between coloured areas so that a minimal shift does not show up as a fringe or an overlap. We advise against printing colour on colour, or filling a fine cut-out in one area exactly with the other. We check this when preparing the print layout and indicate where a clear margin is needed. ### Which colour combinations work best in practice? Red with black on white tape is the classic: red draws the eye, black carries the text. Yellow tape with black lettering and a second colour for the logo works well around hazard zones. For more formal cordons, combine white tape with two restrained brand colours. Avoid two colours of similar brightness – red next to dark brown, or yellow next to white – because they merge into one another at a distance. ### Can a PMS or brand colour be matched exactly? Supply your colours as PMS references and we will mix the ink accordingly. Bear in mind, though, that we print on film rather than paper: the surface is smooth and slightly translucent, so a colour can come out differently than in a printed swatch book. On coloured tape the film tints the result as well. The print layout at actual width shows what to expect; if a particular shade is critical, tell us in advance and we will discuss the best achievable result. ### What if my logo contains more than two colours? We then simplify it to two solid print colours. In practice you choose the two load-bearing colours of your identity; fine detail and gradients are converted into closed shapes or left out. Photographic images and soft gradients are not possible with this technique.
